The Bachelor of Education, B.Ed. (Science) curriculum is designed to produce secondary school teachers to address the shortage of Science teachers at this level. The programme will prepare graduates, with a particular emphasis on rural and regional needs, for a career as secondary school teachers.

The proposed degree programme will provide education theory and practicum to teach Science and Mathematics at secondary schools, Teacher Training Colleges and other levels of education in line with respective policies in Kenya, Eastern Africa Community member states and globally.

The Bachelor of Education (Science) programme is designed to give graduates a strong foundation in the areas of Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Geography and Biology (Botany and Zoology). It will also impart the necessary teaching skills to produce effective teachers at the secondary school level.

In addition to the minimum university admission requirements stated in 1.3.1, applicants for the Bachelor of Education (Science) programme must have:

  1. A  C+ grade or above  in the two teaching subjects;

OR

  1. A minimum of two(2)  Principal passes  in each of the two teaching subjects;

OR

  1. A recognized Diploma in Education (Science) with at least two years teaching experience and a mean grade of C (Plain) at KCSE or equivalent.

Justification

Lukenya University took time to study the needs of the locals and the surrounding community through convening barazas with the community leaders, educationists, politicians, NEMA officials and even prospective students. The purpose of having these meetings was to establish academic programme requirements that would be relevant to the residents of Makueni County and the country in general. During these interactions, there was a strong feeling that the University develop programmes which are responsive to the needs of the locals. Some of the programmes which were proposed in the meetings included Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Science in Dryland Agriculture, Bachelor of Education (Arts) and a degree to cater for the Science teachers. The BSC in Dryland Agriculture, BED (Arts) and B. Com programmes have been approved by the Commission for University Education. Therefore Bachelor of Education (Science) will cater for the need of Science teachers who will effectively teach in the local secondary schools and even Colleges.

Expected Learning Outcome of the programme

By the end of the programme the graduate should be able to:

  1. Plan, prepare, teach and evaluate effectively the prescribed Science subjects.
  2. Describe the  various theories of foundations of education in teaching Science Subjects;
  3. Apply appropriate scientific techniques in teaching the prescribed science subjects.
  4. Carry out research and apply scientific principles in problem solving.
  5. Demonstrate leadership and management skills.
  6. Encourage learners to appreciate science related subjects

Credit Transfer

  1. A student who has taken a similar programme in an accredited university may be allowed to transfer credits to similar units of the programme up to a maximum of 48% of the total units.
  2. No credit transfer shall be allowed for grades below C or a GPA of 2.0 on a GPA scale of 1-4.
  3. Credit transfers shall only be granted within the first and second years of study.
  4. The student must undertake the practicum under the University he or she intends to graduate from.
  5. Where a student is to transfer a course with a pre-requisite, such a pre-requisite must have been covered at the University where the student is transferring from.
  6. All core courses for the programme must be taken by the student in the University he intends to graduate.
