The Bachelor of Education, B.Ed (Arts) curriculum is designed to produce secondary school teachers who can instill knowledge and positive life skills. This programme will prepare graduates, with a particular emphasis on rural and regional needs, for a career as secondary  school teachers.

The proposed degree will provide the education theory and practicum to teach Arts and Humanities at secondary schools, Teacher Training Colleges and other levels of education in line with respective policies in Kenya, Eastern Africa and globally. It will be able to produce individuals who will mitigate the challenges that are envisaged in a number of blue-prints and policy documents such as The Kenya Constitution 2010, Vision 2030, the Millennium Development Goals, Sessional Paper No.1 of 2005 and Sessional Paper No. 14 of 2012.  Also the programme will contribute to actualizing the optimal teaching capacity cadre in the Kenyan secondary schools.

The Bachelor of Education( Arts) course is designed to give graduates a strong foundation in the areas of Educational Management, Psychology, Foundations of Education, Curriculum Development and teaching subjects such as  English, Kiswahili, Geography, History and Religious Studies and the necessary teaching skills to be effective teachers at the secondary school level. Along with the teaching skills acquired in the education units, this curriculum will prepare students to be effective and innovative teachers. The programme seeks to equip the student teacher with relevant teaching skills needed in designing and implementing programmes that meet the individual, professional, institutional, county, national and global educational needs today and in the near future.

In addition to the minimum university admission requirements stated in 1.3.1, applicants for the programme must have:

  • A  C+ grade in the two teaching subjects; Or
  • A minimum of two Principal passes at A level and a subsidiary pass, and a minimum of a principal pass in each of the two teaching subjects.

Or

  • A Diploma in Education, S1 or P1 from a recognized institution with at least two years teaching experience after training and a mean grade of C (Plain) at KCSE or Division III  at KCE or (1) Principal  and One subsidiary at KACE.

Justification

The Bachelor of Education (Arts) programme is anchored on the conviction that it is necessary to nurture professional teachers of high integrity, who are morally and ethically upright.

The programme is guided by an appreciation of producing teachers who are critical and creative in their thinking as they respond to issues in a dynamic world. In addition, the programme is based on the conviction that it is important to produce teachers who are capable of making learning interesting and enjoyable and who are patriotic and committed in the implementation of education policies in the constitution, promotion of national cohesion and capable of solving societal problems with high standards of responsibility.

Expected Learning Outcome of the programme

By the end of the programme the graduate should be able to:

  1. Apply various Theories of Foundations of Education in teaching
  2. Plan and Implement appropriate Programmes for different categories of Learners.
  3. Design, Develop, and evaluate secondary school curricular.
  4. Apply the appropriate techniques in teaching the prescribed subjects.
  5. Plan, utilize and Manage institutional resources.
  6. Teach Arts subjects effectively in areas of specialisation.
  7. Apply the appropriate techniques in teaching Arts subjects.
  8. Use appropriate leadership skills and methodologies in teaching and community service.
  9. Carry out research and apply scientific principles in problem solving.
  10. Show creativity and imagination in handling their areas of specialisation.
  11. Manage and administer Educational Institutions.

Credit Transfer

  • A student who has taken a similar programme in an accredited university may be allowed to transfer credits to similar units of the programme up to a maximum of 48% of the total units.
  • No credit transfer shall be allowed for grades below C or a GPA of 2.0 on a GPA scale of 1-4.
  • Credit transfers shall only be granted within the first and second years of study.  No credit transfers shall be granted in the third year of study.
  • The student records shall officially be communicated between the Universities.
  • The student must undertake the teaching practice under the University he or she intends to graduate from.
  • Where a student is to transfer a course with a pre-requisite, such a pre-requisite must have been covered at the University where the student is transferring from.
  • The student shall be required to transfer all credits attained at the University where he or she is transferring from.
  • All core courses for the programme must be taken by the student in the University he intends to graduate.
