The Bachelor of Commerce programme will prepare candidates for any career in Accounting; Finance; Human Resource; Marketing and Management Science. Graduates will also be equipped to work as public accountants in commercial or government administration, or in private practice.

B.Com positions itself with a strong foundation for continued career growth.  It combines conceptual knowledge in key disciplinary areas with strong technical knowledge required for workplace performance.  The curriculum has a strong emphasis on project work thus building the problem solving and critical thinking skills needed by B.Com professionals.

Courses in this programme will have focus on accounting, financial planning, decision-making and control in organizations. Candidates will examine the fundamental principles of commerce and the business environment, and learn how to apply business principles to contemporary business practices.

The proposed Lukenya University took time to study the needs of the locals and the surrounding community through convening barazas with the community leaders, educationists, politicians, NEMA officials and even prospective students. The purpose of having these meetings was to establish academic programme requirements that would be relevant to the residents of Makueni County and the country in general. During these interactions, there was a strong feeling that the proposed university develop programmes which are responsive to the needs of arid and semi- arid areas. The B.com programme will be supportive to the core areas of study by equipping students with knowledge and skills in areas such as finance, marketing, entrepreneurship, business management among others.

To be eligible for admission into the university, an applicant must be a holder of:

  1. KCSE certificate with a minimum of aggregate of C+ (plus) and a minimum of C (plain) in both Mathematics and English.
  2. EACE/KCE/KACE/EAACE certificate with a minimum of five (5) credits in any five subjects at ‘O’ level and two principals at A level.
  3. 12th grade certificate with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.5.
  4. IGCSE certificate with a minimum of five (5) upper level passes.
  5. GCE certificate with minimum of five (5) upper level passes at ‘O’ level and ‘A’ level passes of C grade.
  6. Any other qualification(s) that may be approved by the university senate.

OR

  1. A holder of diploma or professional certificate in a relevant discipline from an institution recognized by the senate of the university and Commission for University Education.

                      OR

  1. A holder of any other qualification accepted by the senate of the university and Commission for University Education.

Justification

For quite some time now many institutions have been offering non-degree courses such as Accountancy, Business Administration and Management leading to Certified Public Accountant of Kenya [CPA (K)], CPS and Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) qualifications. Following Lukenya’s experience of offering education at nursery, primary and secondary levels it has become necessary to widen its scope of programmes to include degree programmes.

The Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.) programme is expected to prepare students with specialities in Accounting, Finance, Human Resource, Marketing, Banking, E-commerce and Management Science.

The B.Com programme is structured to reflect the changing world of commerce and provide a firm foundation for the world of work. The programme is designed to offer the necessary academic subjects, ethical principles and general studies that should influence decision-making in a business environment. Graduates of the programme will be qualified to work in accountancy, finance, banking, human resource, marketing, management and related fields

Expected Learning Outcome of the programme

At the end of the programme, learners will be expected to:

  1. Apply the knowledge learned to the key tasks in business functional areas.
  2. Carry out necessary research to help in decision making.
  3. Solve emerging problems and changes in business organisation.
  4. Conduct business practices within acceptable legal framework.
  5. Communicate effectively

Credit Transfer

  1. A student who has taken a similar programme in an accredited university may be allowed to transfer credits to similar units of the programme up to a maximum of 48% of the total units.
  2. No credit transfer will be allowed for grades below C or a GPA of 2.0 on a GPA scale of 1-4.
  3. Credit transfers shall only be granted within the first and second years of study.
  4. The student must undertake the practicum under the University he or she intends to graduate from.
  5. Where a student is to transfer a course with a pre-requisite, such a pre-requisite must have been covered at the University where the student is transferring from.
  6. All core courses for the programme must be taken by the student in the University if he/she intends to graduate.
