












Lukenya University, in collaboration with Dorcas Kenya, Groasis Netherlands, and Wageningen University & Research, successfully conducted a three-day training program on climate-resilient tree planting and water conservation technologies from 10th to 12th June 2026.
The training brought together twelve selected farmers from different regions, providing them with practical knowledge and hands-on experience in innovative agricultural technologies aimed at enhancing tree survival, promoting sustainable land restoration, and strengthening climate resilience in farming communities.
As climate change continues to pose significant challenges to agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability, the training focused on introducing solutions that can support successful tree establishment in water-scarce and degraded environments. Participants were equipped with skills and techniques that can help improve land restoration efforts while reducing dependence on conventional irrigation methods.
A key component of the training was the introduction of two innovative technologies: the ZUDROT technology, developed by Prof. Benard Kivyatu with the assistance of Anthony Muuo, and the Waterboxx technology developed by Groasis Netherlands. The Waterboxx is an innovative tree-planting solution designed to collect and conserve water around young trees, reducing water use by up to 90 percent while promoting healthy growth in arid and semi-arid regions.
The training also marked an important milestone with the official handover of Waterboxxes by Dorcas Kenya to support a pilot research initiative coordinated by Lukenya University. The Waterboxxes were distributed to participating farmers who will conduct field trials in their respective locations.
The pilot study will evaluate and compare the effectiveness of the Waterboxx and ZUDROT technologies under local environmental conditions. Findings from the research are expected to generate valuable evidence that will inform sustainable agriculture practices, environmental conservation efforts, and climate adaptation strategies for farming communities across Kenya and beyond.
Speaking on the significance of the initiative, participants highlighted the importance of practical, science-based solutions that can help communities address the growing impacts of climate variability while enhancing food security and ecosystem restoration.
The collaboration reflects Lukenya University’s commitment to research, innovation, and community engagement in addressing pressing environmental and agricultural challenges.
